Neck-deep in early quarantine, a couple of chef friends asked me to score them some cases of wine for personal consumption, most likely to enjoy while binge-watching Netflix and forgetting what day of the week it was. No directions. No preferences. No rules. Just good wine. One of them may have told me not to rip him off, but it’s all a little blurry. While to some that might seem like a lot of trust to place in any one person not named Joe Exotic, the truth is, I drink wine for a living. As in: I get paid to do it. People actually give me legal tender to drink wine. IT’S MY JOB - or at least it was before somebody ate a bat. So, I guess the request wasn’t that crazy, but I digress.

Soon, other friends wanted in. And then their friends wanted in. People were picking up cases of wine at all hours of the day. I’m sure the neighbors got a little suspicious of what I was doing but, you know, snitches get stitches [but also, no wine violence, please]. Keep in mind, we live in a 900 sq/ft rowhome. Pretty quickly, cases of wine were displacing furniture. Living room space aside, as this less-than-legal operation continued to grow, we realized that we had to go legit, as local, state and federal laws tend to frown upon bootlegging, even in 2021.

And that, folks, is how Contraband was born. We didn't start ‘our thing’ to get rich (though we would be very open to that). Nobody is quitting their day job just yet. Our goal is still the same as when we started: we’re here to make sure you always have a good bottle or two (or four, no judging here) to grab during those nights at home or when heading to a BYOB with friends. No more staring at the shelf in the wine store feeling lost and overwhelmed. We got you.

The wines you receive are the same bottles that we’re drinking right now. Drink them with friends. Or alone. I mean, it’s your wine, drink it when you want, how you want. But we look at wine in the same way that we look at food: it’s an adventure that is usually best shared with others. Just know that we don't put a wine in the box if we wouldn’t buy it for ourselves.
